Slacksgiving 2014Nov 10th, 2014 | By AndyBandit | Category: Events, Pick Up Games
Hello to everyone in the LA ultimate community!
I’m pleased to announce that SLACKSGIVING will be on us again, making its annual appearance on Wednesday, November 26, at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena. In case you’ve forgotten what this is or how it works, Slacksgiving is an annual afternoon of fun ultimate brought to you by the good folks of Slacker Wednesday (our motto: “It works because you don’t.”) We start around midday and go, basically, till we can’t see the disc. So whatever time your evil boss lets you out of work, make a beeline for Haha — we’ll be waiting for you.
Also waiting will be abundant food, drink, friends, family, dogs, and anything/anyone else you care to bring. Never has there been a Slacksgiving without two full fields of play (and plenty of Patron) and the only thing that I think could stop us this year is if it gets any ridonkulously hotter during this brutal LA autumn, and we all just kind of melt.
I don’t see that happening, but you never know.
Veterans of Slacksgiving know that there’s always a charity component, too. This year is no exception, so please plan on donating some non-perishable foodstuffs (cans, cartons, sacks and bags — any unopened package that can survive without refrigeration) and help us…
Door of Hope is an awesome local social services organization with the vision and mission to “Equip Homeless Families to Rebuild Their Lives.” All your surplus bags of fava beans (they go well with a nice Chianti, Clarisse), boxes of Oreo knock-offs from the 99¢ Store (Moreos? Ignoreos?), and cans or jars of Pickled Particulars will go a long way toward helping the Door of Hope feed their clients, so get your goody bag going now, and put it by the door where you won’t forget it on the day.
Not for nothing, but Slacksgiving happens to happen during the same week that my new novel drops, and my publisher,Bafflegab Books, has generously provided a passel of promo copies for me to distribute on the day. Your ten-dollar donation to Door of Hope gets you a free copy of POOLE’S PARADISE, An Imperfect Search for Purpose, and stocks the Door of Hope’s larder that much more. Tim Eby-Mac has volunteered to handle donations, via cash, Square or PayPal, so stick a tenner in with those fava beans and help out that way, if you’re so inclined.
One more thing… SPREAD THE WORD! Especially to all your working-stiff ultimate buddies who never get to play in the middle of the day in the middle of the week, and/or random out-of-towners coming home for the holiday — tell them to pack their cleats! The morer the merrierer, yeah?
Questions, comments, observations? Send ’em my way: firstname.lastname@example.org. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing you at the — OMG — 12th annual SLACKSGIVING ULTIMATE SPECTACULAR AND FOOD DRIVE FOR DOOR OF HOPE.
Twelve years…yeesh…that’s a whole shit-ton of Slacking. I really should get a job.
Keep ’em flying. -jv
