GAME RECAP

No way around it.  Hello Kitty is on a roll.  This is their 4th straight win and the point spreads are getting greater.  Their final game is against Dynomutt, and if they can finish with 5 straight leading into the tournament, they’ve gotta feel pretty good about their chances.  Also, the 1st round bye is up for grabs for the top 4 (and bottom 4) teams because of the 6 fields at the tournament, and Hello Kitty is definitely in the conversation for one of those spots.

We’ll start with the Hello Kitty side of things.  Here’s Ethan Lacoe:

After playing on the melted cardboard fields at Belmont High School last Friday, Hello Kitty was super excited to place on a nice turf. Josh remarked that Sepulveda is his favorite place to play, and I definitely feel the same way. The turf is A+ quality, the soccer players are always off the field at the right time (they don’t linger like they do at Rancho), it’s always clean, and there aren’t random people walking across the field rapping at full volume (although this might be a positive for some people).

The game started in classic Hello Kitty form… A marathon first point. Felix came down with a zone and after 4+ turns each, Hello Kitty took the point. Kitty countered by breaking twice to go up 3-0. Felix then scored their first point on a half field huck to Kirkham. Amy responded by hucking to Avatar for a score. It was a perfect throw and Avatar used her closing speed to make the easy grab. Felix tried the zone a few more times, but we had it figured out and took half 8-2. Felix played a little better in the second half, but it wasn’t enough. Final score was 15-6 Hello Kitty. Additional highlights: KJ skying his defender. Macey’s IO forehand for the score, and Bridgette scoring and being one of the most improved players in the league. She came into the league with essentially no ultimate experience and it’s amazing how much she’s improving each week. Speaking of improving, I can’t believe how much Hello Kitty has improved since week 1. It’s been a slow and steady growth, but it’s been consistent. We are 4-0 in the second half of the season with a +24 point differential. With the win last night, this is officially Amy’s first winning season!!! That’s hard to believe considering she’s one of the most valuable players in the league, but that just shows that it takes a team effort to be successful in ultimate. Hello Kitty is the most well rounded team I’ve ever played with. Everyone is contributing and it’s been a lot of fun.

Yeah, that’s awesome for Amy.  Amy has had an unfortunate Summer League career so far.

2015 – Rainbow Bar & Grill (1-9)
2016 – Black Mote (2-10)
2017 – Time Trapper (4-7)
2018 – Apollo (2-6-1)

And she says she wasn’t there for a few of the Time Trapper victories.  So this season has been a great turnaround for her.

And now for the Felix side of the things, it’s the one and only David Reed:

We were down by 7 points to Hello Kitty and had an amazing comeback. Somehow at the last minute we came back to win by 2!

Of course I’m talking about Nay and I winning Bar Trivia the night before against a team wearing this Kenny Omega (pro wrestler) Hello Kitty shirt. It really was a spectacular comeback.

It had to be a good omen!

Sadly, our trivia win streak has coincided with Felix’s losing streak. I think the universe will only allow us so many “wins” in a given week.

****************

I wish I had a video of tonight’s game and a locker room.

I gather my team around a trash can full of paper towels. Without saying anything I toss in a book of lit matches and drop the game tape into the flames.

Then we silently go back to work, entirely focused on next week’s game.

We will be reborn. And rise like a Felix from the ashes.

It would be very dramatic.

The game started off with a 3-0 run for HK.

Hello Kitty then used their power to make us throw with our off hand.
I get the disc and unleash a big lefty huck to Kirkham to make it 3-1. I probably should have thrown lefty more.

Felix just didn’t have the will tonight. A record number of drops had us hanging our heads early.

We had a few individual plays that need to get mentioned:

Rune catching her D in the endzone sandwiched between KJ and an HK lady. This is at least the 2nd time she’s D’d a first round guy to save a score. Rune is a force of nature on D. Fearless.

I got a sick layout D on HK’s best guy (I assume he was their best guy cause he was wearing a pink tutu, power move) I then picked up the disc and threw an ugly huckling, catching the smallest bit of contact on my follow through and called foul. The tutu man didn’t contest which shamed me. We were down, I was frustrated, not my best call. Spirit point HK.

Horace threw the dirtiest IO break of the night. Where has he been hiding that throw all season!?

D-Con got a massive hand block on a throw to the break side.

Nay informed me we won the bar. And Erica’s new nickname is KEG.

Nay’s notes on the bar:

“Got super into feminism talk.
Table smacking.
Fist pumping!
Wooo!
Probably one of the best spontaneous bar conversations”

Oh c’mon, you know I need new nickname explanations.

Will you tank trivia to help your Summer League team in the tournament?

I like what you did there: Felix/Phoenix. *clapping*  Well played.  (To which Reed undoubtedly is thinking right now, “but no comment on my ugly huckling?”  Yeah, that’s good, but not clapworthy.)

Are people missing the powers?  Just curious.  I was wondering if next year bringing back something similar when the theme is Summer of Thrones.  To coincide with:

The powers were a ton of fun, but having them in back to back years was a lot. I kind of like them as a change up. Every few years adding them back in when things feel stale! I’m more bummed that the jerseys are all generic this year! The individual team logos were so cool! And I’m telling you…. The best of Broadway for 2020.

I really liked the powers too! I think it definitely keeps things a little more fun and light. Not sure how I feel about each team having one specific power (2016) or two powers up for grabs each game (2017). But I’m all for bringing them back in some capacity! .

I liked the way the powers worked last season. It kept it fair and balanced and interesting week to week. No one was stuck with one power.

Is it mathematically possible for Felix to earn a bottom 4 1st round bye if we lose our final game?

We will not tank trivia, but if it happens, so be it.

Instead of powers, how about “Experimental Ultimate”: For a subset of the games, tweak the rules in an interesting way and measure the effect on fun-ness: e.g. Stalls to 7, Cross-gender scores for 2 points, Make-it-Take-it with hockey subbing, etc.

You’re saying try a power for the entire game?

That’s ambitious. I thought I could get by with the powers cause they were only used once a game. Not sure people would like playing an entire game under a rule variant like that.

But I’m open to hearing all ideas.

I’m starting to wonder about all these trivia wins.

    Is anyone else showing up?

I’ve been on bar trivia teams with Reed and Nay, they are by no means slouches… but this is like 4 weeks in a row

    I’m skeptical
