Apologies again for these coming out so late. I was at a wedding on Friday. And then yesterday, when I meant to put these up, we decided to go get lunch at Eataly and see Ocean’s 8. More things happened in the evening, but I think you already know more than you ever wanted to know about my Saturday. Shall we get to Thursday night’s recap? Underdog was a favorite show of mine growing up. So much so that when Marshall went to Lucky 7’s and did a Superheroes team, I was Underdog. I still have the costume (which Chris Walthers should definitely wear during the tournament.) Scratchy of course comes from the Itchy and Scratchy cartoon within the Simpsons. I was never a huge Simpsons guy. Although now that I work for Fox, I have licensed material from that show every day for the 18 years I’ve worked there. It is BY FAR the most requested title in Fox’s library. Titanic, Avatar, Star Wars, Family Guy, the Alien franchise, the X-Men franchise, Glee – they all get a lot of action, but Simpsons tops them all by a long shot. Here’s the other co-captain of Underdog, Stephanie Hicks, with the recap from Thursday night’s game: There’s no need to fear! Underdog is here! when the Scratchies of the world appear speed of lightning, roar of thunder when at halftime the headlines read speed of lightning, roar of thunder Underdog. Underdog! Half 8-5, Final 15-7 Highlights: To quote Scratchy Captain, Remy, what an awesome way to start summer league! It was a kick ass first game with high level play and only a few marathon turnover points. Both teams had a lot of talent and speed, with awesome D’s and scores by Scratchy’s Chi and Cable and one amazing double-bobble-miracle grab by Grant. There was an epic handblock by Underdog’s Merlin, and some awesome Matt Theologidy and Toph connections that I’m excited to see continue, and a “new dad” connection on a game-winning huck from Johnson to Johnny Lam. But the game was really dominated by Underdog’s Ladies, led by the super speedy underdog of the night, Kelly Harunk, who had multiple D’s and scores. Underdog’s Cortez, Laura, Sam and Ruth all scored at least once, and kudos to Scratchy who were playing savage part of the game and had a lot of newer women but always threw to them, giving them lots of disc time, a key to building confidence. And to Remy who handled multiple collisions with the Underdog ladies with spirit. But by far my favorite moment of the night was when Toph looked-off a very open Matt, to launch a HUGE huck to Sam Kelley for a score. And most importantly, Underdog had a good showing at Joxers. A great start to what promises to be a fun and competitive summer league! I used to have that theme song memorized when I was a kid. I should apologize to the millenials in the league. Several of the characters in Summer League are long before they were born. I’m a child of the 70’s, so I admit I had to include some characters from my childhood. I was wondering if anyone went to the Backstage Bar to check out karaoke Thursdays, but sounds like from both recaps everyone went to Joxer’s. Maybe next week.
GAME RECAP
whose speed and skill cause all to fear
they sky and D both far and near
the cry goes up to the stratosphere
for Underdog! Underdog! Underdog! Underdog!
we huck and score on every blunder
Underdog. Underdog!
8-5 Underdog, Scratchy took no heed
they cut and scored with blinding speed
but alas they could not take the lead
from Underdog! Underdog! Underdog! Underdog!
we huck and score on every blunder
